Earlier today, I watched as the Speaker of the House attempted to nationalize certain passages of Scripture. She stated, “what does it profit a nation if it gain all the world at the cost of its soul?” This was cringeworthy to say the least. I don’t mind if Christians in political office cite Scripture to emphasize a point, BUT do so in proper context without perverting or misrepresenting the text! When Jesus made this rhetorical inquiry (recorded in Matt 16:25, Mark 8:36, Luke 9:25), He was speaking of the eternal implications of following Him OR rejecting Him. In essence, deny self, follow Jesus, and gain eternal life; deny and reject Jesus and choose worldly matters and gain eternal condemnation. Madam Speaker was way off point in trying to secularize this Biblical truth.

But let me go a step further in this overall topic. Those in favor of abortion have sought scriptural support by taking passages out of context *Num 3:15, Lev 27:6) OR pleading to silence from the Bible regarding abortion. Abortion is defined, “the deliberate termination of a human pregnancy.[1]” Planned Parenthood released a “Pastoral Letter to Patients” which states, “Many people wrongly assume that all religious leaders disapprove of abortion. The truth is that abortion is not even mentioned in the Scriptures — Jewish or Christian — and there are clergy and people of faith from all denominations who support women making this complex decision. The beliefs of each person are deserving of respect, and each person deserves care and compassion, No one should be allowed to force their faith teachings on anyone else.[2]

So, the question becomes, “does God approve of abortion?” This can be answered simply with “NO” and supported by words directly from God and Jesus alike. How so you may ask? The Law which God gave Himself to Moses and Israel in Exodus 20:3-17. God gave 10 Commandments of which “thou shall not commit murder” is among them. Abortion is by definition and admission the murder (unjustified killing) of an unborn human. Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS) addresses the Lev 27:6 and Num 3:15 uses as, “The Bible verses of course do not in any way support abortion. The verses speak of the amount of money a person would pay the priests in order to redeem, to buy back, an infant who had been dedicated to the Lord in a solemn vow (Leviticus 27:6) and the minimum age for the census of the Levites that Moses was going to undertake (Number 3:15). The mere mention of children being one month old in these passages does not in any way suggest that human life that is less than one-month old is expendable and can be aborted.[3]

God gave 10 Commandments to Moses, for Israel. These serve as foundational to the moral law which is written on everyone’s heart (Rom 2:15). Jesus, when confronted which law was the greatest, gave two: Love God and Love Others—Jesus condensed the 10 Commandments into 2. How is it possible to believe killing an unborn child is displaying love to God and love to others? Man was made in the image of God (Gen 1:27-28)! God commanded Adam and Eve to “be fruitful and multiply (Gen 1:29), not selectively terminate children—that argument from silence has more weight and support than PP’s! God is the Author of Life, and as such, is the only One Who is justified in His decision regarding who lives and who dies; we are His creation.

The main point is this: if a politician wants to use Scripture to justify a claim, USE IT PROPERLY!! Jesus was not speaking about America and our political turmoil; that is not the context of those passages. Likewise, abortion is not supported by Biblical texts, rather it is condemned under the category of “murder” which violates God’s law concerning how we are to treat each other. It is very easy to have an idea, and to twist the meaning of Scripture so that it appears to support the position. This is called eisegesis, and this is often heretical! We are to view ourselves through the lens of Scripture, not view Scripture though the lens of ourselves (our presuppositions, opinions, emotions, prejudices, etc).

~In Christ!
